MOSSY CREEK (PRIVATE):  The private stretch of Mossy Creek is owned by Amish people who lease it out. The Rainbow trout that are stocked there are not capable of sustaining their own lives without daily artificial means.  Therefore, the Amish people and automatic feeders keep the trout alive with daily feedings (like at a hatchery).  This feeding also keeps the trout from moving into the nearby public stretch.  Without these daily feedings there would be no trout population in the private section.

HISTORY of MOSSY CREEK: There is only one strain of Brown trout that has been successfully stocked that is self-sustaining and grows at a high rate for many years, and they are stocked in the Public stretch and receive no artificial support. All other strains of Browns, Rainbows and Brooks have failed to survive on all sections of Mossy, public and private. The water composition is not conducive to trout survival to any trout other than the one strain of Brown that is stocked in the public section by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF).

OUR VIEW - PUBLIC SECTION: Though the angling is tough and success comes hard, the educational and informational aspect will help increase your knowledge base for most other trout waters you will eventually visit, something that is missing in an artificial setting with daily artificial feedings.  If you wish to learn more about trout and trout fishing and enjoy a realistic challenge, we invite you to book a few hours with us on the public stretch of Mossy Creek for trout that sustain their own existence and eventually take on wild colors and wild characteristics. To consider booking, click HERE.
