Update for:
February 20, 2012 ...

VIRGINIA TROUT STREAM and FISHING REPORTWinter Season
Accessibility: Caution - Deep snow on Sunday February 19 in Augusta, Highland and less amount in Rockbridge, Rockingham and Albemarle. Most forest service roads are not accessible in Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge and Albemarle with most open in Rockingham. Up to and over eight inches of snow in some areas. But, high temperatures the rest of the week will melt most if not all of the snow leaving very wet, muddy roads. Accessibility for the rest of this week is limited. Use caution if you take any of these roads in the counties mentioned above.
Water Clarity: 90% clear.
Water Level Spring Influenced:
70%. Water flowing nicely.
Water Level Spring Creek:  40%. Water flow is low but moving and fishable.
Water Temperature:
 45°.

Weekend Fly Fishing Pressure:
Very Low. Few trout being caught as anglers are not out in numbers.
Weekday Fly Fishing Pressure:
Very Low to None. Few trout being caught as anglers are not out in numbers.

Weekend Traditional Fishing Pressure: Streams, ponds and lakes are receiving early winter stockings. Put-n-Take angling is light but steady. A few trout are going on stringers.
Weekday Traditional Fishing Pressure:
With waters receiving their stockings, pressure, though low, is less than during the weekends. A small number of Trout are being taken.

Technique:
Look for undercuts, runs and food chains. Use mostly bead-head nymphs. Use dries during mid-day when there is sun and the air has warmed or where water levels are shallow.
Road Accessibility
: Accessible everywhere.
Success:
Small numbers of fly fishermen are visiting a few streams. Streams are full on spring creeks and on spring-influenced waters.  Almost no anglers during the week making for wonderful, peaceful fly fishing.  Special Regulation areas that are natural (native Brook, Wild Rainbows Wild Browns) have very low angling pressure.  Pure Native Brook Trout fishing holds the best as pressure is none-existent.

VIRGINIA SMALLMOUTH BASS FISHING REPORT: Next Report mid-May 2012
Water Clarity:
75% clear.
Water Level:
Full.
Water Temperature:
70-74°. Most areas the water is in the low-to-mid 80s.
Weekend Fishing Pressure:
Low.
Weekday Fishing Pressure:
Very Low.
Technique:
Streamers in faster water, poppers in slow water near the shallow river edges.  Best success late-day up to minutes before darkness.
Road Accessibility
: Accessible everywhere.
Success:
Rivers remain full. Success is dropping as the fall season approaches and the water temperatures drop.  Fish in slower water using slower methods.
